What do we offer?

The centre conducts various training programmes for the students as well as for outsiders.

Programmes for Students

Based on our experience with students we have identified the need for training inputs in three core areas. The centre conducts both short term (vacation) as well as long term (on- going) training in these areas.

1. English Language: A number of our students are from regional language schools and so face a disadvantage in an English medium environment. The English language training focuses on spoken and written communication. The students work with our English trainer on sentence construction, vocabulary building, essay writing, etc.

2. Computer Use and Applications: Most of our students reach the First Year Undergraduate level with little or no computer experience. The students have to be proficient in computers before they can access the centre’s facility. Our Training and Development Officer conducts personalized computer courses based on the students’ requirements. The focus of these courses is to train students to use the specialized software for the visually challenged, namely JAWS, Kurzweil and Magic; as well as to use MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Internet Explorer.

3. Mobility Training: Every year new students join us either in the First Year Junior College (FYJ.C) or the First Year of Senior College (FYBA). Many of them, especially those from integrated schools, lack an important skill required by any visually challenged person for independent living, that of mobility. The centre with help of qualified mobility instructors conducts mobility training. The follow up of this is done by the centre’s staff who have been trained in basic mobility.

Programmes for Outsiders

In keeping with our vision to create an enabling environment for the visually challenged both at the micro as well as macro level we seek to reach out beyond the college. Special computer training programmes are structured and imparted to any outsider on request.

We have recently trained Optometrists to handle the low vision and special aids for persons with visual impairment.

If you or your organization would like to enroll for our training programmes, please contact us and we can create a need specific programme for you.
