Support Programmes
The centre provides a wide range of support to students as well as outsiders to help them cope with their regular work and to maximize their potential. These include:
1. Student Development :
The Project Officer through individual counseling and interaction with students helps them to continuously identify new areas of personal growth and to work towards achieving these. These range from personality issues that need attention to new skills that the student may need to develop. This is an on-going need- based activity.
2. Volunteer co-ordination :
Writers, readers and typists are made available to students as well as outsiders on demand.
3. Alternative Format Production :
We provide Braille print-outs, audio outputs as well as other alternative format materials on demand.
4. E-Library and Database :
The XRCVC has set up an electronic database of both academic and non academic books. Currently our collection consists of a five thousand titles ranging from classic literature to law and beyond. The database is open to outsiders as well. The XRCVC has also become a primary member of the DAISY (Digitally Accessible Information System) forum of India and we also produce DAISY books- special accessible format for the visually challenged.
5. Extra-Curricular Activities :
The centre has a range of extra-curricular activities from a Debating Circle to Guest Lectures to help students expand their horizons. The centre also conducts annual sporting events – an inter-college cricket championship amongst the visually challenged as well as an intra-college chess championship. The sporting events give the visually challenged students a platform to participate. They also help to spread awareness amongst other sighted students and to break common misconceptions.
6. Computer Loans :
Having recognized the advantage of computers to provide a window of opportunity to the visually challenged, the XRCVC has initiated a computer loan scheme to its students for their personal use at home on a need basis.
